Scholarships

Type 1 Scholarship

  • Pays all tuition and fees at any school and provides $900 per year for textbooks.
  • This is a four year scholarship. This does not cover room and board. 

Type 2 Scholarship

  • Pays tuition and fees at any school up to $18,000 per year and provides $600 per year for textbooks.
  • This can be a three or four year scholarship. Scholarship payment is capped at $9,000 a semester or $6,000 per quarter.

All scholarship recipients (and all AS300s and AS400s) receive a monthly stipend during the academic year. 

  • Freshman: $300
  • Sophomore: $350
  • Junior: $450
  • Senior: $500

Scholarship recipients must be a U.S. Citizen to be eligible to receive a scholarship and cannot hold dual citizenship.

  • Scholarship program available for junior/senior high school students. High school students planning on taking one or more gap years are ineligible to compete for the scholarship until they apply immediately proceeding the academic year in which they plan to enroll in AFROTC as a full-time student at an AFROTC-affiliated college/university. To maintain eligibility for the High School Scholarship Program during gap years, prospective applicants must not be enrolled as a full-time student at any college or university during the gap years.
  • Application for the Fall 2024 year opens on July 1, 2023 and closes January 11, 2024
  • All majors are eligible for scholarship however priority is given to students pursuing technical or foreign language degrees. More information about the application can be found at the Air Force ROTC Scholarship page.
    • They will be competed based on the following qualifications:
      • Be a U.S. citizen by the last day of the first term of their freshman year
      • Pass a Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) medical exam
      • SAT composite of 1240 or ACT composite of 26: Super scores are not accepted. 
      • Cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher
      • Physical Fitness Assessment (1 minute push-ups, 1 minute sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run): If offered a scholarship, you must pass the Physical Fitness Test before the end of your first semester of college.
  • This is a Type 1 scholarship. Starting for Fall 2022 recipients, HSSP Scholarships have been upgraded to Type 1 only. 

During your freshman and sophomore years of the program, there are two opportunities to receive a scholarship: Commanders’ In-College Scholarships (CICS) and In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP).

  • The Commanders' In College Scholarship (CICS) is handed out by the Commander of the detachment to a cadet pursuing a technical major who is performing above and beyond what is required and standing out among his peers in both academics and ROTC. This is a Type 1 scholarship.
  • The In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP) is a national competition in which you must be nominated by one of the officers at the detachment for this scholarship. This is a Type 2 scholarship.

Both scholarships will be competed based on the following qualifications:

  • GPA (College) (recommended >3.0)
  • Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) or SAT/ACT. The highest score is used.
  • Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) (recommended >90%)
  • Commander’s Ranking (Ranking against your peers in the detachment)

During your junior or seniors years of the program, there is another opportunity to receive a scholarship, if not already contracted: General Charles McGee Leadership Award

  • The General Charles McGee Leadership Award (CMLA) qualifies all cadets in their junior and senior year. This is a Type 2 scholarship. CMLA may be converted to a housing scholarship of up to $10,000 per year for two years of on-campus housing. (Restricted to room only, not board). 
    • They will be competed based on the following qualifications: 
      • Academic, Physical, and Medical requirements
      • Completion of Field Training (unless with approved Field Training deferment) 
      • Selection to enter the Professional Officer Course (POC) (must have two or fewer academic years of undergraduate college remaining) 
  • Scholarships can also be offered to students studying at one of the 22 institutions to study Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, or Russian, with the goal of Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Level 3 proficiency upon completion. This is a Type 2 Scholarship. 
    • The Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) may provide funding for a fifth-year Capstone program overseas or intensive summer language programs to eligible AFROTC cadets.

  • At all times, the Air Force will offer scholarships to encourage interest in specific career fields. This is a Type 1 Scholarship.
  • These scholarships have the same requirements as the other scholarships, however, they also secure you into a specific career field post-graduation. You must be majoring in an Air Force-highly desired major, such as Nursing, Engineering, or Foreign Language. In the past, Express scholarships have been offered for the Missileer and Combat Systems Officer.
    • They will be completed based on the following qualifications:
      • Be a U.S. citizen by the end of the projected term of activation 
      • Must be 17-30 years old.
      • GPA (College)
      • Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT)
      • Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA)
      • Medical Physical Exam 

Scholarships are not guaranteed because you are part of AFROTC.
