Instructor and Operations Officer

Lieutenant Colonel Joseph B. Herwatic is an Instructor and Operations Officer for the Air Force Reserve Officer and Training Corps, Detachment 330 at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. In this position, he is responsible for program guidance, oversight, and leadership development of Air Force cadets.

Lieutenant Colonel Herwatic commissioned in 2008 through the Officer Training School.  He is a graduate of Student Undergraduate Navigator Training, Undergraduate Remotely Piloted Aircraft Training, and Detachment Instructor Instructor Course.  Prior to his current position, he served as the Branch Chief of Lead Command, Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.  He began his career flying aboard the C-130 E/H prior to piloting the MQ-1 and MQ-9.  His operational aviation experience includes flying numerous training and combat missions in direct support of Operations INHERENT RESOLVE, ENDURING FREEDOM, FREEDOM SENTINEL, and many more.

Lt Col Herwatic is a Remotely Piloted Aircraft Pilot with more than 2,300 hours in multiple aircraft.
